I like this book. I like the characters, the writing style. But I can't read the book. I can't rate the book (just rating in on Amazon because I have to). And there is a very simple reason.Widow's Might is the third book in the Liv Bergren series. And I haven't read books 1 and 2. Normally, that doesn't pose much of a problem. Authors are aware that readers don't necessarily start with the first book and slowly reintroduce characters and if the plots of the previous novels are important enough, they briefly explain them as needed. But this isn't like most series. Most series (especially mystery) have central character who finds herself (or himself) immersed in a mystery for whatever reason and at the end of the novels, solves the crime, catches the bad guy, gets the guy (or the girl), etc. etc. The next book then revolves around a completely different crime.
Not this series. Not only does it have the same characters but it is basically the next episode of the same large overall mystery. As the synopsis point out, this novel "picks up right where the second one left off". And this, in essence, was my concern. The book just began with action, action, action. I hadn't connected with the characters, I couldn't understand what was going on, I couldn't follow the story; basically, my lack of knowledge about the previous books kept me from fully enjoying this book. Therefore, I did not finish the book (I read about a 100 pages, then put it down).
That's not in any way Brannan's fault. I think she's unique and bold for using such a way to write the series. If I had copies of books 1 and 2, it is quite likely I would have enjoyed this whole series immensely. The actual characters are witty and likable, and the plot is both fast-paced and thorough. With that said, don't read this unless you have the previous books in this series on hand. This is the kind of series that you have to read all at once.
So readers, I end with a "Caveat emptor". Some have gotten along fine without previous books, some (like me) have not. Can you?

Widow Might A Liv Bergen Mystery Liv Bergen Mysteries Sandra Brannan 9781608323722 Books Reviews
This is the first time I have read this author. There are other books in the series before this one, so now I want to go back and read them from the beginning. I enjoyed the book and recommend it for mystery lovers.
Her books are a series so must start with the first one and progress from there. I live in the area where she focuses her stories so that adds to the interest as the story builds. I am anxious to read the next one.
Yet again, another Very good read from this author
This is her third book and I have enjoyed them all. Nice to live in the area and when she makes reference, one knows exactly where she is or one can relate last time they were there. Great reads and my friends now have my books.
I am really enjoying all of Sandra Brannan's books. Now I am waiting for number 5. Story is well told, not to long, not too short. Characters are believable and some continue on in other books. I do suggest that you read these in the order they were published.
Another great Liv Bergen Mystery. Sandra Brannan is fast becoming my go to author for a sure-fire thriller. The Widow's Might is full of high adrenaline action and romantic suspense. The chemistry and tension between Bergen and Streeter is palpable. I am looking forward to the next Live Bergen Mystery . . . Noah's Rainy Day.
The best of the three Liv Bergen mysteries so far. Liv, a mining executive and part of a large mining family spread between Colorado and South Dakota has been visiting her brother in Rapid City at the time of the Sturgis Rally. Immediately following the events of Lot's Return to Sodom which dealt with the murder of her sister-in-law-to-be, but ended with the murder of a local rancher, Liv gets swept up into the investigation of the rancher's murder and the cold case of The Crooked Man murders.
The FBI now seriously courting Liv to join the agency, Liv's meddling continues in a semi-official capacity. A string of ranchers' deaths spanning more than a decade fall together into a serial-killer pattern with Liv and family at the center of the action unfolding in the latest investigation.
Also unfolding is the slow simmering attraction between Liv and Special Agent Streeter Pierce but like the case, this plot line does not unfold in a linear orderly fashion, adding to the depth and color of the story overall.
But this is NOT a romance novel, it is bloody murder and a psycho serial killer who not completely crazy but definitely not completely normal in any respect. Through in the ties to the history of the Black Hills and this is one amazingly rich and intriguing story.
Each installment of the Liv Bergen series gets better and better, in my opinion. Even better is that each can be read and stands on it's own while having read the previous books in the series only enriches the reader. The pace is fast in this book, the writing is tight, the story holds itself together even in the complexity being woven, and the past events are alluded to but the story is not dependant on "in a previous episode..." explanations. Everything that is relevant to this storyline is contained within this book.
This is not my typical choice of book - I do not like the TV show about the FBI profile team and the psycho criminals, and I do not typically read 'darker' fiction prefering my reading to be more upbeat might be the way to put it. However, for this series, I make an exception. Highly recommended if this book falls in your 'usual genre of reads' and even if it doesn't.
