Approximately one-half of the adult population of the United States are being told that they harbor within their bodies a silent killer. This "killer" is cholesterol. Millions are prescribed cholesterol lowering drugs making these pills the most prescribed (and most profitable) medications in the history of American medicine. They are told that these drugs will protect them from the ravages of heart disease. This is patently untrue and can be easily demonstrated by critical analysis of the data presented in the very medical studies that purport to show their benefit.
The cholesterol mania that has gripped the country and dominated mainstream medical thought for the past 40 years is based on widespread acceptance of a set of closely related theories variously called the Cholesterol Theory, the Lipid Hypothesis, or the Diet-Heart Theory.
The Cholesterol Delusion systematically refutes these prevailing theories that link diet and blood cholesterol levels to coronary heart disease and heart attacks.
The Cholesterol Delusion traces the development of these theories from their origins and shows that each step in their evolution was based on faulty evidence and unscientific reasoning. The book then takes it one step further and attacks the very foundation of the "risk factor" paradigm that has dominated cardiovascular research in particular and much of medical research in general for the past 50 years.
Written in plain language for the intelligent layman, the arguments are presented in a way that can be easily understood by readers with a limited medical or technical background. The Cholesterol Delusion is must reading for anyone that has been told they have elevated cholesterol levels and/or must take medication to lower them.

I am writing this review as being in full agreement with all the other reviewers. Many thanks to Dr. Curtis for writing a sober, professional treatise about this issue (and avoiding the word "conspiracy" in the title). It is good to hear the common sense approach to the epidemiological studies as presented by a respectable physician. Unfortunately my physician, as well as others, will not accept responsibility for their patients refusal to take statins, I assume, to avoid any sort of libel should the patient develop cardio-vascular problems in the future. As a result, I have not been to a doctor as regularly as I should (to check for other problems) because of their insistence that I need to take these drugs. My physician recommended statin therapy 20 years ago. After a period of about two years, and the recommendation to go to 80 milligrams from 40, since my total cholesterol wasn't low enough (below 120), I developed muscle aches which prevented me from engaging in any physical work. The response from my physician was to switch to another brand (Zocor instead of Lipitor - same ingredient?). I gave myself a few months to "dry out" of the old medication, and followed his recommendation. Again the problems returned. Again I complained. He felt my complaints weren't justifiable since the blood test that measures excess liver enzyme was always negative.I am 65 years old and have a total cholesterol level of approximately 300 since they started the "numbers" game , and have no other health issues. I eat well, exercise regularly, and have the right weight for my size. I have been off statins for two years, and have substituted salmon oil and a daily aspirin. It takes a while for symptoms of statin poisoning to disappear, but, as a result of taking the common sense approach to health, I feel great.
It is worth mentioning to physicians that there is another hidden danger in this class of pharmaceuticals in that they create a false sense of security. Many folks that I have talked to feel they can avoid exercise, indulge in unhealthy foods, sugars, and saturated fats as long as they take the pill. Many doctors will agree that this approach is wrong, but it sort of begs the question; "If I still need to live a healthy life style, why do I need to bother with the medications in the first place?"
Then of course there is the whole issue of the way that pharmaceuticals are promoted to the lay user as well as the medical professional in the interest of corporate revenue, but that is a whole topic in itself.

The Cholesterol Delusion Ernest N Curtis 9781608447480 Books Reviews
The current thinking about cholesterol is more than a shame, it is a crime. This book is one of many which explain the real science behind the fact that cholesterol is not bad for you. Read it and decide for yourself.
Dr. Curtis exposes the cholesterol fallacy via a thorough dissection of the "research" used to fuel the medical industry's moonstruck fixation on statins. If you're taking a statin or your doctor is urging you to take one, you should read this book now.
Thank you to the good Dr. Curtis for sticking his neck out and de-mystifying the nonsense behind the Good Colesterol / Bad Colesterol media circus.
Statins are big business and cause multiple side effects. This book gives you ample ammunition to stand up to the entrenched medical machine.
The double blind data shows no connection between colesterol levels and heart disease. It's up to you to resist the statin mania sweeping into your lives.
The book is clinical and educational in a matter-of-fact way.
A good follow up book would be doctor Curtis's suggestions for optimal heart health, and long life, from his 30 years of cardiology experience.
Dr. Curtis writes very efficiently and in relatively few words he clearly explains how modern cholesterol theory is based on badly flawed studies from 25 - 50 years ago. Even the "clogged pipe" metaphor of how an artery becomes obstructed is wrong! However he does not require the reader to blindly accept his assertions as he trains the reader on how to review studies and provides two of the foundational studies so that the reader can see for themselves. If you have a doctor chasing after you with their "statin hammer", this is the first book you should read because you won't have to read any others unless you really want to.
This book gives you all the information you need to understand how the cholesterol theories developed and why they are most likely untrue (i.e. not substantiated by real scientific research). The author explains the history of how this all came about (as have a # of authors) but he presents science in terms that we all can comprehend without having to earn an MD or wade through scientific jargon. Of particularly interest is the instruction on how to read research papers in order to glean the essence of the study rather than the hype presented by their authors or the media. I've read a # of books on this subject and this was the clearest on comprehending the science so that I could make an informed choice about my labs and possible medications. Highly recommend.
Wonderfully concise summary of the dietary fat humbug. The main text covers about 100 pages, which is the most digestible (heh) comprehensive statement of this I had found. It also has two of the original articles often cited as proving the dangers of ingested cholesterol, and shows why they do no such thing.
In addition to dispelling the ingested fat hallucination, this book is a compact course in reading and comprehending research of any kind. It would be a great reading for a Scientific Scope and Methods course.
People sick of being subjected to diets from cattle feedlots, or who wonder why they are taking statin drugs that make them feel lousy just to change a number on a computer printout, needs to read this book.
