Avalon Fires pits a married couple, Gwen and Richard, against a wild fire rushing across the landscape. Their only means of escape are a battered Honda motorcycle and a Yamaha with little fuel. As the inferno surrounds them, there appears to be no escape; they must hold together to face the inevitable.
Lastly, Coward’s Song follows a man’s internal struggle with his own demon, specifically to overcome the fear of heights – and the use of a particular ladder. As he does his utmost to dominate the feelings that are driving him down, he finds himself faced with an unforeseen obstacle that will try his mettle.
Etheredge manages to give the reader four very distinct stories, all stemming from the root of human strength, endurance and power. His depiction of the action in each is solid and believable. The detailing in the narrative around the settings draws a clear picture for the reader and brings us into the scene in a vivid manner.
I recommend this entertaining and evocative book of short stories. They will get your adrenaline flowing and hour spirit soaring.
