The Girl at Midnight was nothing how I thought it would be and everything I could want it to be. I didn't know how this book would go when I read the synopsis but I didn't expect this. The plot line was excellent, the characters verse and complicated, the writing was good and the world was interesting.

Echo is a human girl caught in a world of magic and she stands up for herself. The Avicen people are who she grew-up around but she was human and they were other. Sure she had those who loved her and those who didn't mind her being around but there were others who didn't like her, for the fact that she was human. She had to deal with that type of racism for a good chunk of her life but her life wasn't a bad one. Echo had people who loved her, friends, she traveled the world and used magic. To survive in our world and this magical she had to be strong. Echo was feisty, smart, caring, brave and challenging, I love her.

I feel I can do a brief summary for the other characters, something that doesn't need a whole lot of words.

The Ala: A mother type with a strong backbone and a sense for good.
Rowan: A friend who needs to get his self together
Ivy: A truly good person who is supportive and kind beyond belief
Caius: An unexpected surprise, who fights for what he truly believes in
Dorian: Brash, stiff, loyal but a little lost
Jasper: A Six of Crows character (a different Jasper), I am telling you he would fit right in

One of my favorite things about this book is the fact that Echo travels all over the world, Asia, Germany, England, and so on. Also the way she travels kinda reminds me of how they traveled in Harry Potter (think Floo-powder). The story was so good that I hated to put the book down, I read a big chunk of it in one day. I was so excited about reading this book and when I wasn't reading the book I was trying to figure out what would happen next.

Girl at Midnight is about a human girl and her friends on this big magical scavenger hunt that is suppose to lead to something called the Firebird. The Firebird is a myth to most but a few it's a means to getting power, power that could be use to either save or destroy. If Echo's enemies get their hands on the Firebird it could mean an end to one race. On the journey to the Firebird Echo will find magic, mystery, murder, betrayal, fighting, love and friendship. I am get the next book in the series as soon as I can.

This book hooked me from the first chapter with its unique characters and excellent writing. I strongly recommend it--it reads like a new classic, like a Phillip Pullman book (but not). A gem.
The Girl at Midnight is a fun fantasy novel that resembles The Daughter of Smoke and Bone in style and atmosphere. Originally, this is why I picked it up. I mean, I adored Daughter so when I head reviewers comparing it with this new book coming out, I knew I had to get my hands on it! And The Girl at Midnight doesn’t disappoint. It’s quick, filled with snarky humor and a sassy protagonist. The Avicen and Drakharin (magical races in the novel) are interesting and creative. The story deals with war, friendship, love, magic, and personal strength, all while balancing humor and fun, which was pleasant and made it easy to get into!

The characters are fun too. Echo is our lead protagonist and the only human character. She’s witty and filled with book references which are a bonus for me any day. Her romantic counterpart is Caius, who has a decent amount of characterization, enough to fill me with fluffy feelings for the two, but the same-sex relationship budding between Dorian and Jasper was much more enjoyable and less cliché. While some of the side characters are less filled out, the main cast is enjoyable with their bickering and growing dynamic as the story progresses.

The writing is very elegant and atmospheric. While Melissa Grey doesn’t quite hit Laini Taylor’s level of lyrical magic, Grey is very promising in her debut and I look forward to seeing her style become more refined. This book includes a lot of elements that are popular in current urban fantasy fiction but it’s all pulled together in a new and entertaining way. If books such as Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Shadow and Bone were personal favorites, I’d try picking up The Girl at Midnight next.
It was a great book for the first half. Quite a page turner with funny and well developed characters. Then suddenly the story gets all disjointed as if the author rushed is and doesn't bother explaining half of what happened and seems to take the easy time skip method to avoid writing more... I really wanted to like this book but after that ending? Meh.
The first 1/3 of the book was a little slow. The main character, Echo, made an over amount of snarky comments, and her co-characters, who were centuries old, also made snarky comments continually. It seemed to make the book less about the problem that needed solving and more about who could outdo each other. By the 2nd half of the book, however, the story seemed to move on past that and actually turned into a decent adventure and journey for Echo and those whom she loves.
I thought the story was unique and different, but I didn't love it. It was good; the writing was good, as well as the characterization. It just didn't have the hook enough for me to continue on with the series. I think this is because I don't care for the love triangle I see coming, as well as the weirdness of a young main character being with an "older" man.
I found this book to be slow at the beginning yet I was determined to finish it. Near the half way mark it became more adventurous feeling and the romance level kicked in. After reading it through I was pleased with how connected I felt to the characters. I do believe this was achieved by Melissa taking her time to provide the reader with lots of small details of each character, Thus the slow beginning. I'm definitely interested in reading the next book in the series.
