I struggled a lot with how I felt about this book. It starts off very slow. Like we spend what feels like forever trudging on about the main character's life in the dorms before finally getting to the important event, which is the car accident that traps them in the woods. Really, this could have had five chapters chopped off the beginning and been better for it. The first male character we are introduced to, Gage, is not really likable. He sleeps around and pretty much sees girls like objects. Our heroine isn't going to be any different until he starts getting jealous of male character #2, who we don't meet until like chapter nine, way too long into the story, especially when you figure out by the end that's who the author wants this heroine to end up with.

And that's really at the heart of why I assigned the rating I did and why I just don't like this book more. The author has some interesting ideas. She can clearly write. And in the last two or three chapters, she picks up the pacing and gets into some more interesting plotting. But the fatal flaw with this book is that she has written two male leads that I have absolutely no desire to see with the female character, that I have no desire to "fall in love with" as the reader myself through the main character. Gage is an egotistical jerk who turns me off so completely within the first couple of times we hear his POV that there's nothing, NOTHING he could do later that would salvage it. Seriously, he could like, stand in front of a truck for this chick and I still wouldn't buy it because of what a jerk he was painted as in the opening chapters. So he's out as an option.

And Hunter is no better. Lots of books use an Alpha-male or a dominating male, and that can be effective, but it's a fine line to walk, and in this case, I am so turned off by Hunter constantly forcing himself on the main character in countless little insidious ways, there's just no way he can grow on me. He insists she cannot sleep with Gage, and eventually forces her to sleep with him, seeming to think that as long as there's no sexing involved, it's okay. But what seemed sweet and devoted in Twilight or The Hunger Games is completely creepy and nauseating here where Mary Ann isn't giving consent, and is in fact constantly begging Hunter to let her go. There are a dozen other examples I could give like this, but you get the idea. In short, I can't pull for Mary Ann to end up with either one of these guys. They're both jerks. And that's a shame, because I really wanted to like this book.

Dire The Dire Wolves Chronicles Book 1 edition by Alyssa Rose Ivy Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

I think it's time to admit to myself that I have a SERIOUS 1-Click problem when it comes to books! I have almost every book that Alyssa Rose Ivy has written but Dire is only the second book of hers that I have actually read! My question to myself is WHY THE HECK HAVEN'T I READ THEM ALL?

Alyssa is an AMAZING author! Dire is a book that you can easily consume in one sitting. Unfortunately for me, I have a sick daughter at the moment, and it took me longer to get through it. Each time I picked up my I was instantly transported back into Mary Anne and Gage's world. I was absolutely engrossed in this story!

I'm fairly certain that those of us who are paranormal lovers have read our fair share of werewolf stories. I found Dire to be unique, and it was refreshing reading something a little different.

Not only was it unique, but the story was entertaining and easily held my attention. I connected with the characters easily, and felt like I was right there with them. It's great when an author makes you feel like you are right there beside the characters. I love feeling that strong, intense connection and being dragged through the story on an emotional level.

If you feel like reading a book that you can lose yourself completely in, you should seriously read Dire by Alyssa Rose Ivy. You won't be disappointed. I wasn't!
This story will make more sense to readers that have read the author's other series (Crescent Chronicles, Empire Chronicles) where she builds this contemporary world of humans and paranormals. A reader beginning here may view the story as weak or the characters lacking. While this may be read as a stand alone series, the reader would need to disregard elements that seem slow or nonsensical in the over all plot and pacing.

Now, with that aside this first book of the Dire Wolves series is an interesting and at times a disturbing read. The connection bridged over fantasies or childhood crushes between Gage and Mary Ann is at times awkward and then seems based on lust, but when thrown into a bad situation beyond their control the appearance of the Dire wolves make them look sane and worthy of being with one another. The leader of the Dires, Hunter, comes across as a psycho without any redeeming qualities, but as the book progresses the readers starts to see another side to him. It soon becomes clear that Hunter will lay his life on the line for his pack and those he loves--he really isn't a bad guy. He's made some bad decisions, but they become forgivable. At the same time both Gage and Mary Ann are forced into accepting a bigger world around them while dealing with their unexplored feelings and desire for a relationship, which appears to be slipping further out of the reach. When this books ends a reader may be split between Gage and Hunter, and which character is worthy of Mary Ann, but in the same moment there's still enough question about her that a reader may not be sure whether both male characters are better off without her. Intriguing.

I give this story a solid three star. It is engaging and will keep a reader's interest (more so to someone who has read the other series leading up to this one). There's just enough depth and mystery surrounding these characters that a reader may want to pick up book to, if for no other reason than curiosity to see where it's going, and whether the unknowns and questions raised in this book are answered. It's not, it's not the worst, but it can be a fun read for those open-minded enough to give it a go.
