This is a great book that I originally bought from Scholastic, but gave to another teacher when I retired. I recently bought a copy from Amazon to use with my grandchildren and with the local history reading nights in our community. It is the story of a young girl who writes to a friend while on a trip south with her older brother. She sees slaves at work and witnesses a slave auction and is shocked and saddened. It is well-written and feels authentic, as if from a young northern girl of that time.

I was shocked and delighted to find a hard copy of this wonderful book in the "Friends of the Library" section of my local library. My lucky day to find this treasure for only 25 cents. I teach 8th grade social science and have used this book for the past 12 years. Inevitably I will have at least a few students with tears in their eyes as I finish reading this book to the class. There is SO much you can do with this book whether you are a parent and educator or someone who just loves books. No matter what your purpose is for buying this wonderful story, reading the story aloud to a child or student opens up a dialogue about slavery. One of my all time favorites.
Nettie's Trip South is a large format children's book with pencil illustrations on every page by Ronald Himler. It is based on diary entries of the author's great-grandmother. The book tells the story of 10 year old Nettie (Henrietta) and her sister accompanying their older brother on a trip from Albany New York to Richmond Virginia in the year 1859. Nettie has never seen slavery before and relates her encounters with Virginia slaves in a letter to her friend when she returns. A simple yet profound condemnation of the South's Peculiar Institution.
In simple but beautiful language and illustrations, this book conveys what it was like for the girl from the North to travel to the South before the Civil War and see slavery for the first time. Strongly recommend this book.
Such powerful impact.
this is actually a good child's book...it's written in letter form....
This book is a compelling tale of a young northern girl's visit to the South during the time of slavery. It is a book that highlights the raising of the girls' conscious. It worked well when I used it as a compare and contrast piece with abolitionist literature designed for children from the 19th century.
The teacher that I work with always read this book to the class when we studied slavery. It is a great book. The kids can visualize the story and understand what slavery was and how it effected our history. He misplaced the book, so I replaced it for him.
A worthwhile lesson.
