Ms. Mahoney epitomizes the ideal conclusion to a trilogy with The Stone Demon. Thankfully void of loose ends, neither was each and every situation systematically closed out, as if checking off a list. Admittedly, some resolutions and explanations are needed; and answers were provided in a very satisfactory way, with any remaining questions providing excellent points to ponder long after the story has been told.

The first book, The Iron Witch, introduces Donna Underwood who wants nothing more than to be a regular teenager. Such a simple request, yet utterly impossible for her. She has been shrouded in mystery and secrets since she can remember. Flashes from her distant memory serve only to remind her that her father died trying to save her; the magical iron tattoos used to restore her arms will forever make her an outcast; her mother is in an asylum and she is left with only her aunt.

Further, Donna isn’t being raised as a typical teen. Rather, she is being “trained” for her rightful position within a Secret Order of Alchemists. So secret, in fact, that she knows almost nothing about the Order, which means she can’t really trust them. One more, tiny detail: Donna is being pursued by faeries and she has no idea why.

Yes, readers. I am telling you about a unique, intriguing story that features Fey, Alchemy, Demons and Ley Lines (oh, my)! Mixed in with the wizardry, and accompanying Donna on her journey of discovery we have her best buddy Navin. He is, hands down, one of my favourite fictional characters of all time. His sharp tongue, quick wit, and self-admiration make him amusing and delightful; particularly when situations are dark and dire. He provides the stability and balance Donna needs, and their friendship typifies the strength, support and unparalleled loyalty that so many teens sweetly maintain.

With a rich, compelling cast of characters, a tantalizing mystery unraveling, and just a dash of romance, The Iron Witch Trilogy is a must read for any fan of Fantasy, Mystery and/or YA. If you have a teen-aged reader in your life, turn him/her on to The Iron Witch Trilogy and you will be revered. You’re welcome.

After being tricked by Aliette into opening the door for the demons to return to Earth, Donna has two days to create the philospher's stone the demon king is demanding or else he'll destroy London and her home town. Donna is pretty much on her own since the alchemist's have said it is an impossible challenge and are gathering forces to fight a war with the demons.

Donna does have some allies. Her best friend Navin may only be a "commoner" but he is smart and loyal. Xan may be busy working with Maker to get wings so that he can fly again but he comes when Donna calls. And Maker, himself, is on Donna's side.

This was an exciting conclusion to the Iron Witch series. It was filled with action, danger and romance.
The Stone Demon was a truly amazing conclusion to a wonderful series. I don't think there could have been any better of an ending.
I thought it was a great book,would love to see more to the story if they come out with another book i would buy it

This was the final book in this series, and though, the first two were not well written, I felt too invested in the series not to complete the third in the trilogy. The series would be appropriate for a younger audience than myself, and I will not be looking forward to reading other books by this author in the future.
Karen Mahoney does an extraordinary job in wrapping up her "Iron Witch" trilogy in THE STONE DEMON. Her youthful and completely believable protagonist, Donna Underwood, has grown a great deal since her introduction in THE IRON WITCH and deals with the otherworldly threats to her family, friends and the rest of the entire world by her wits, self-determination and inner-strength. For me, it is the sense and theme of inner-strength that is most important here.

Donna is not unlike many youngsters and perhaps more than a fair share of young women, who doubt their abilities to deal with conflict and challenges. Rather than handing over responsibility for the handling of these affairs or surrendering her fate, to what may be often viewed as appropriate, to her male counterparts, Donna does her own ass-kicking. Certainly her friends, young male pals and adults, are called upon to assist and indeed become important to get the job done; Donna is fully prepared to face her fears and doubts to accomplish some very difficult things before the end of the book.

What makes this all the more important and truly heroic is that like anyone, Donna always has some nagging trepidation but overcomes those because she must. The odds may be stacked against her and those she cares for, but she will not give up without a fight or without trying her hardest.

The narrative is a nice blend of romance and action. Both are handled skillfully without gratuitous or easy copouts. The scenes of romance are touching and believable; though I am not a 17 year-old girl, likely reflect personal experiences and feelings. The action is fast and the sense of danger is felt for all concerned. Though violence occurs, it happens mostly in the mind of the reader as Mahoney does not dwell on it. Violence begets sacrifice and loss which is very much present by the end of the story. The losses create reflection and in most cases, respect but moreover, a real assessment of what sacrifice means and what violence does.

For parents, be advised that there are a few curse words used, but nothing a 13 year-old child has not heard on television or at school. Mahoney uses these instances sparingly and to the right effect. Also, there are some well-timed laughs along the way. I'm not sure I could've handled too much drama without a break and Mahoney does so at the right moments.

Donna's story is not over in my view. Though she has grown and learned, there are still lessons for her to acquire and master. There are goodbyes but the promise or at least the hint of reuniting many of these characters in the years to come. Fortunately, Donna is still searching for what love means and I would have been disappointed if, at 17, she'd figure it out at such a young age. There seems to be the realization dawning upon Donna that love, commitment, companionship and angst-filled desire may arrive at different times in her life and finding the right combination of all those things must be worked out as she continues to live this crazy thing we call, "life."

Recommended for any young reader, 13 - up and any adult who appreciates a good Urban Fantasy yarn.
