I was hooked at page one! I am not usually a big reader, but I could not put this one down! I got so involved in the characters! If you are looking for a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, Hard Whispers is for you! I did not want it to end!! Love it!

An evil government plot of staggering magnitude.... the birth of WikiLeaks.... a small boy in mortal peril.... this wonderful book has all the elements of a first-class thriller and is one of the best of its kind that I've read.

The conspiracy that gradually emerges is staggeringly OTT, but it is so skilfully developed that the reader doesn't balk, and the book rips on to a wonderfully satisfying conclusion. This is a traditionally-styled adventure in the tradition of John Buchan and Anthony Hope, and I staid up nearly all night to finish it.

The work is extremely well written and immaculately presented. Of particular note are Martin's characters, each one, even minor characters, beautifully drawn out in loving detail. The characters' different speech styles are wonderfully done, and this is an area where many writers fall down. I especially loved the pungent villains.

The one sex scene was handled with beautiful restraint, for which I award full marks, and the conclusion, an area where many writers nowadays fall down, was properly handled, with loose ends tied off - no dishonest cliffhanger ending to force one to buy another book here. Martin's readers will buy another just because this one was so good.

All in all, a beautiful piece of work, and for a first novel, really extraordinary. I look forward very much to the next book in the series.
If I could give it less stars I would.
I wanted to like it, I just didn't. Very slow, I would fall asleep reading it. Oh well, theres plenty out there.
My god this was awful.
I really can't imagine a publisher contracting for this book, so I suspect it was self-published. In any case, the story line is weak, and the character and plot development more in line with what I would expect from a high-school student who rushed an essay near deadline. Do yourself a favor and avoid this book and this author.

This book started with the promise to be a great, exciting thriller, but in my opinion, fell short on fulfilling that promise. As hard as I tried to make it all the way through, I increasingly struggled with the believability of both the story and the characters as I got deeper into the book.

Somehow a recent college grad with little life experience stumbles across Europe while flying commercially and avoids getting nabbed by both the CIA (which has successfully toppled entire governments) and an unnamed Russian agency that ostensibly morphed from the KGB (which ruled the Soviet Union with a fearful, murderous iron fist for decades), all the while repeatedly sailing through customs even though she's wanted for kidnapping a child in Russia and smuggling him out of the country. Both agencies want her either dead or silenced because they think she's discovered a nefarious joint plot by both agencies to kill thousands of people in both the U.S. and Russia with tainted vaccines. Problem is, the vaccines haven't even been produced yet because they tried to use the normal manufacturing and distribution network of the CDC. But the head doctor ran a few tests, discovered something hinky was up, and bounced out of the country to hide out in Spain.

I had to give this book one star because I just couldn't bring myself to finish reading the story. If I'm reading fiction, and I have to talk myself into picking a book back up because I find it painfully unbelievable, I have to relegate it to the DNF (Did Not Finish) shelf and move on to something else. I was fairly disappointed Hard Whispers had to end in such a demise. I had so looked forward to a great story. However, I was sadly unable to find it here. -(
