Saving the Rifleman War Girls edition by Julie Rowe Romance eBooks Reviews

It was an enjoyable quick read. Usually we don't hear about the troubles in Belgium during WWII but they were very real. Another example of the Germans indiscriminate killing of civilians and leaving them with nothing.
A fast read with an interesting, under-used historical background a WWI Belgium during the German occupation. Great hook and high tension from scene one on. Likeable characters, who felt as if they belonged in their historical period. (I get cranky when historical characters have modern mores.) Looking forward to more in the War Girls series.
I was quickly pulled into this book. Julie Rowe writes in such a way that you can't help but be transported to another time and place. As someone whose not big into war stories, I was impressed with this book. I found it quite enjoyable. The book was written in such a way that my heart picked up at the right moments and I couldn't wait to read what happened next. I highly recommend it.
I don't come across too many historical romances set during WWII, so this really was a nice change of pace. The story follows a British Red Cross nurse who works in a German hospital. Maria cares for all wounded soldiers who cross her path, including the British, at no small risk to herself. She even helps the men get back across the border to safety when she can.

John is one of those soldiers. He was shot across enemy lines and seeks refuge in the hospital where Maria works. But he is discovered by a German officer. From that point, he and Maria must make a run for friendly territory before they are caught and killed.

As they travel, it gets harder and harder for John and Maria to fight their growing attraction. Their biggest external problems are John's injury and the constant threat of danger from the Germans. But internally, there is a stumbling block too. John and Maria come from different classes, and though he could care less, it weighs on her throughout the story. She feels like her low background will forever prevent them from having a real future.

I enjoyed the story. The writing was good. I liked both characters and I liked them together. The pacing was good and the WWII backdrop made it fresh for me. I felt, at times, like a bit too fine of a point was put on the class difference issue in Maria's mind. It was on the border of overkill. And these two were claiming to be in Love within a matter of days. This earned an eye roll or two, but overall, it was a sweet romance with a feel-good ending.
It's the Great War and Maria is a British nurse in Belgium. Naturally, she sympathizes with the British. When a handsome wounded British soldier appears hiding in a closet of the hospital, she struggles to save them both... He needs to get home with some special information and after getting caught and almost raped by a German officer as she tries to save John, she has to run too.

But John has a wounded leg, Germans are stalking him after the Officer's humiliation, and Maria is falling hard for a man she feels is above her in society. Dare she part with the one thing of value she has on her person...her heart and her female charms?

Things happen in the heat of the moment...

The story was action packed with cute dialogue. There were moments of intense suspense when I thought they were going to die or not get away. The run doesn't stop with leaving the hospital. They have quite a few intense moments as they try to reach the border.

What I didn't like At times it was TOO easy. I mean, really, the Germans didn't take us war twice and for so long by being stupid. Nobody looks in the closet? The chickens in the coop don't make a bunch of racket and alert the soldiers to the intruders? After his gunshot wound, already sewed up twice is kicked repeatedly, he can walk?

Some things didn't make sense to me, but in all, it's a good story, and the ending was fantastic! I love how Maria handles herself against a cousin. That is all I'll say.
At first glance, I wasn't sure about Julie Rowe's Saving the Rifleman. I was intrigued by the historic setting, but in all honesty I was afraid of repeating the experience I had with Charlie Cochrane's Promises Made Under Fire. I have nothing against the genre, I am just not well-versed in it and as such, don't have a lot of confidence in my ability to review these titles. This being the case, I humbly ask that you bear with me and continue reading with the understanding that my background is in historic and young adult fiction rather than romance.

Okay, enough with the disclaimer and on to the review. In terms of content I think Saving the Rifleman has a lot going for it. WWI, occupied Belgium, how often do you find this stuff? I mean really. France, Germany, those titles are a dime a dozen, but Rowe tapped into a lesser known chapter of the war and though her focus is not the history of the occupation itself, the time and place give Saving the Rifleman a really fresh and original feel.

Another thing I liked about this piece was the level of conflict Rowe worked into this story. For a war time romance, this piece is really very well-balanced. I wouldn't go so far as to say I was genuinely concerned over the fate of Rowe's leads, but I wasn't bored and that is certainly saying something.

My only complaint about this book is how underdeveloped the relationship between Maria and John felt. I understand the modest length of this piece meant Rowe didn't have a lot of wiggle room to explore and develop their feelings, but all the same, the accelerated velocity of their romance felt a bit too contrived for my taste.

So do the pros outweigh the cons? I think it's pretty obvious they do. Maybe it is a little forced, but Saving the Rifleman is still an enjoyable piece, a light historical with a unique premise and that sets a nice pace for the rest of the War Girls series
